What is Botox® Cosmetic?

Botox® Cosmetic is one of the fastest growing and most popular cosmetic procedures in the world. It is a purified protein know as Clostridium botulinum that is administered by fine needle injections that dramatically improves the appearance of “frown lines”, “forehead lines”, “crow’s feet” and other dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles are wrinkles that appear as we use muscles during facial expressions. When we smile, laugh, or frown, the delicate muscles underlying the skin contract causing lines to appear. As we mature the lines become more apparent and if left untreated can be seen even when we are not using the muscles. Botox® has been used for over 15 years to treat a variety of medical conditions including headaches, excessive sweating and muscle contractures. It is one of the most readily researched medicines in the world. With exponential increase in our knowledge of the science of aging, Botox Cosmetic® has emerged as an exciting new treatment for minimizing the visible consequences of aging.

How does it work?

Botox® Cosmetic blocks the chemicals that cause facial muscles to contract, which relaxes the muscles. By relaxing the muscles, the lines that result from facial expression are lessened or disappear completely. A small and safe amount of Botox is injected with a very fine needle into the treatment areas. It has been proven safe and effective, with very little side effects. During your consultation we will discuss your goals with you and what results you can expect. Because the needle is so fine and only a tiny amount of liquid is used, the pain associated with the injection is usually minimal. For those who have a difficult time with injections, numbing cream, ice or nitrous oxide can be used to minimize discomfort and anxiety. The entire procedure lasts less than 5 minutes and you can resume your regular activities following treatment!

How long does it last?

For most people, visible results appear within several days and last three months. Some people obtain longer results by repeating the treatment when the results begin to wear off.

Botox® is not recommended for people who are allergic to human albumin or botulinum toxin, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or those who suffer from certain neurological disorders such as Myasthenia gravis.
